For one low-key, high-energy night, tweens get the run of the Center: giant games, gaming consoles, open chess boards, and pizza, all in a supervised, social environment that feels grown-up without feeling overwhelming.

Discovery Chess League Tournament

The Discovery Chess League Tournament is back—and we’re excited to welcome players together for a rescheduled day of school pride, sportsmanship, and meaningful match play.

This scholastic-style, unrated tournament brings students from across Richmond-area schools into one shared space—many competing against peers they’ve never played before. The focus is on skill development, confidence, and community, not ratings or pressure.

Think of this event like a soccer match for chess: structured, supportive, and rooted in respect for the game and each other.

Tournament Format

  • 4 rounds of play

  • No clocks

  • Notation optional

  • Players compete within skill-based brackets, not school size or reputation

Skill Brackets & Awards

  • Beginner

  • Intermediate

  • High Intermediate

All participants receive a participation medal.
1st–3rd place certificates are awarded in each skill bracket.

Sportsmanship Matters

This tournament emphasizes:

  • Respectful play

  • Grace in both wins and losses
