Chess at the Discovery Center at Stony Point™ is more than instruction—it’s a thinking environment designed to help players grow strategically, emotionally, and intellectually.
We approach chess as a STEAM discipline, connecting logic, pattern recognition, creativity, and problem-solving to real-world skills. Whether a child is just learning the game or preparing for competitive play, our chess programs are built to meet players where they are—and help them move forward with confidence
Chess Club: Consistent Practice, Guided Growth
Chess Club is the foundation of our chess ecosystem. It provides regular, structured opportunities for players to practice, learn, and build confidence in a supportive, discovery-driven setting.
Chess Club focuses on:
Skill development and game fundamentals
Strategy, tactics, and pattern recognition
Sportsmanship, focus, and resilience
Guided play and open-board experiences
Players are grouped by skill level, not age, and supported by experienced chess coaches who guide learning through observation, challenge, and reflection rather than lectures.
Chess Club is ideal for students who want steady improvement, consistent practice, and a strong connection to the chess community.

Beginner Chess at the Discovery Center at Stony Point™ introduces children as young as three years old to chess in a way that feels welcoming, age-appropriate, and confidence-building.
Young learners explore the board through storytelling, movement, and hands-on play while learning how the pieces move, how to take turns, and how to make simple decisions. Our child-centered environment and guided coaching allow kids to try, adjust, and grow without pressure.
By designing both the space and the experience for young learners, we make chess accessible from the very first move—building comfort, curiosity, and a strong foundation for future growth.
