We encourage schools to maintain their own chess equipment, including tournament-regulation boards and pieces.
If a school is participating in the league, we will provide the sets.
While not required, access to online chess resources such as Lichess, ChessKid, or Chess.com can enhance instruction. Access to a smart board or similar classroom display is also helpful.
Parent volunteers are not required when a Discovery Chess Coach is present. Schools are welcome to include parent volunteers; however, volunteers may be asked to sign a confidentiality/NDA agreement to protect proprietary Discovery Chess program materials.
Each weekly session is 75 minutes (1 hour and 15 minutes).
Discovery Chess will provide one to two coaches, depending on the size of the group.
Yes. The program is designed to accommodate both beginners and students with prior chess experience.
Our ideal grade groupings are:
- Kindergarten–2nd grade
- 3rd–5th grade
- 6th–8th grade
For an elementary school program, we generally recommend K–5th grade, depending on enrollment and the school's needs.
For middle and high, 6th - 8th and 9th - 12th
Yes. We recommend a maximum of 14 students per Discovery Chess Coach, subject to the size and setup of the available room.
Yes. Depending on coach availability and scheduling, we may be able to add an additional group. Students may also be placed on a waitlist or given priority for a future semester.

For after-school programs, we recommend beginning immediately following school dismissal.
For before-school programs, an 8:00–9:00 AM time frame works well. Earlier sessions, such as a 7:45 AM start, may also be possible depending on the school's schedule.
Discovery Chess generally operates school clubs in seasonal sessions:
- Fall: beginning after Labor Day
- Winter: beginning in January
- Spring: beginning in March
Specific start dates can be coordinated with the school's calendar.
League match events are typically approximately 2.5 hours.
For schools participating in the Discovery Chess League, participation in the scheduled League matches is an expected part of the program.
Each 75-minute session combines instruction, practice, and game play. A typical session includes:
- 15 minutes — Beginner Instruction or Intermediate Open Play
  Beginners focus on learning how to play, while returning players begin with supervised open play.
- 15 minutes — Chess Instruction
  Players learn age- and experience-appropriate concepts, strategies, and techniques.
- 15 minutes — Skills Practice
  Students apply the day's lesson through guided exercises and practice.
- 20 minutes — Match Play
  Players use their developing skills in structured games.
- 10 minutes — Puzzles & Goals
  Sessions conclude with chess puzzles, individual challenges, and player goals.
