DISCOVERY SUMMER 2024

REGISTRATION NOW OPEN

We look forward to meeting your camper this year!

Bushcraft STEMCamp

Bushcrafting is the art of being resourceful and respectful of nature, using ingenuity and natural resources to build shelters and learn essential survival skills. The focus of this camp is building shelters using STEM principles including the engineering design process.

Campers will meet daily Monday through Friday from 9am-3pm (with an optional overnight camping experience with a parent or guardian) to design and build a 6'x6' dwelling using only hand tools and natural materials. Campers will use logic, math, simple mechanics and engineering to design, build and put their outdoor skills to the test.

+ StoryBook Chess

  • Description: Young campers will discover chess through an engaging storybook, imaginative play, and developmentally- sound activities. The story book introduces a new chess character, and each day, campers will be able to develop literacy skills, experience some exercise and movement, develop their imagination, and practice early hand-eye coordination skills through tracing, coloring and matching. Since this camp is for young learners, students will be allowed to be distracted and share special moments, items or experiences that are important to them. This means that the camp is fluid and flexible in keeping with the nature of younger learners. However, children must be able to listen to a story, be able to redirect their attention, and not interrupt the lesson for others. This camp is best suited for children who are experienced with classroom or daycare routines, are potty trained, and have verbal abilities.

NOTE:

  • Requires a Non-Refundable Booking Fee for Reserving Seasonal Camp

If choosing the Select Registration Kit, this is just a handshake that in reserving one of these high demand weeks of the year, we are mutually committed to bringing kids the best experiences ever!

**Why a Booking Fee? ** We are a small business doing big things across Richmond, VA. Led by Coach Rhonda, we hold summer camps, programs, and events with a small, but mighty team. Because there are roughly 8 -10 weeks in summer, we are typically booked for them all by mid October of the preceeding year. Our programs and events have a similar trend, and we are often invited to return annually. But occassionally, there are openings and we want more kids to experience our programs.

For this reason, we want to work with community partners who really want us on their campus so we have to be intentional about our booking calendar.

+ Basic Requirements

For all programs, the establishment agrees to provide the following:

  • A guaranteed space each day/week which can be set up prior to arrival/picking up students.
  • This space needs to be clear and free of clutter and ready for our program needs including space, tables, and technology access and equipment to include a large monitor or projector or the space for our own gear.
  • No boxes or teacher/summer items may occupy the MAIN space. We do not run programs in storage or holding spaces for the safety our team and children.
  • Groups will always have a minimum of 10 campers or players.

Discovery Chess provides all chess sets and gear, instructional material, and a fun, engaging curriculum. All support staff and coaches will be background checked.
